Tough Conditions, Elite Guiding: RAanglers Fiji

Before we dive in, let’s get one thing out of the way: this is not a paid review. There is no sponsorship, no kickback, and no special arrangement. This is simply an honest account from someone passionate about Giant Trevally (GT) fishing who wants to share a genuinely exceptional experience with the community.

How It Started

I first crossed paths with Ryan during a GT trip on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. His sheer passion for the sport, combined with his willingness to share deep technical knowledge, left a lasting impression. That encounter ultimately led me to his guiding operation: RAanglers Fiji, based out of the Volivoli Beach Resort.

The timing of this trip was entirely unexpected. I was originally scheduled to fish in Oman at the end of March, but middle east airspace closures forced a last-minute change of plans. RAanglers Fiji stepped in and filled the gap perfectly.  PS: Thanks Adam and Derrick join this journey together.

The Operation

I went into this trip wanting to experience the complete picture—the logistics, the hospitality, the guiding mindset, and the hunting grounds. RAanglers Fiji delivered on every single front.

We were fishing at the tail end of the wet season, with trade winds building steadily throughout the week. The conditions were tough. Even with great currents driven by the full moon, it was a setup that would test any angler’s patience and adaptability.

Ryan’s response to the adversity was masterful. Instead of pushing through blindly, he worked through the challenges strategically - constantly reading the water, adjusting the game plan, and finding ways to maximize every window of opportunity the ocean gave us. That kind of guiding - calm, deliberate, and backed by deep experience is exactly what you want when the conditions stack against you.

On the Water

To be completely honest, we didn't return home loaded with trophy photos. But what we did experience was consistent, thrilling fish activity.

GTs and other apex species showed genuine interest in both topwater and subsurface lures across various tide stages throughout the day. We raised some truly respectable fish—and we failed to land them. But that, too, is part of the game. We came. We saw. We will correct, adapt, and return ready.

The field experience gained on this trip was invaluable. Understanding how fish behave under challenging conditions and observing their reactions to different retrieves and tide windows is the exact kind of knowledge that builds a better angler. Not every successful trip is measured in captures.

The Verdict

RAanglers Fiji offers everything a traveling GT angler looks for: the right environment, a elite mindset, top-tier security, and the kind of hospitality that makes a remote destination feel like home.

It was that good!
